Why is screening important?
Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer related death in western countries. 60.000 colorectal cancer related deaths are expected this year in USA.
Colorectal cancer can be prevented if polyps are discovered and removed early before they become cancerous.
It is believed that tumors take years to develop from a benign non-cancerous polyp. Nevertheless, individuals at greatest risk of developing colorectal cancer remain largely under screened. This is due, in part, to poor public awareness and acceptance of current screening techniques.
